27 June, 2009 -- Flowers doing well

Flowers are doing well, but still no ripe tomatoes! Watering them every day since it quit raining last week. I have a big plastic barrel to store rainwater, so let's see it rain again, now that we have the roof!

There are ants everywhere (outside) on the trumpet vines, the tomato plants, green beans and the hosta, all massed in a tangle.

26 June, 2009 -- Rain in Arkansas; not here, it was 95

Watched this thunderhead fade off into the twilight as we ate supper at the new restaurant out by Pizza Hut. Our old fav, the Wagon Wheel, has lost so much business lately, they were closed early.
Is this the month for organizing, or what? I made forty-leven trips between the old shed, the garage, the landfill, and the house and airport today, cleaning out nine years of piled up stuff. The old shed is going away, and a new storage building will take its place, later this summer.

Thunderstorms were moving in from the west, so they enclosed the west end to protect the office. It is a great relief to have that roof, after seven weeks! (Storms went south, and north, and missed us). And incredibly, we could use some rain already! Ah, summer.

23 June, 2009 -- Trusses up

Trusses are up, maybe get some sheet metal up tomorrow.
I flew to Boonville and Higginsville today and shot aerials of corn fields. Lots of nitrogen fertilizer loss due to so much rain this spring.

Outside my window... Moths, mosquitos, and bugs wanting to get inside to the light, and two night blooming cereus blossoms that I almost missed seeing in the houseplant garden on the far side of the deck.

I am thinking... I wish these blooms would last more than one night.
I am thankful for... all those ants are on the flowers outside, and not in the house!
From the kitchen... what's a kitchen?

I am hearing... the Western Channel, Gene Autry, and two guys snoring.
Around the house... Outside, bamboo poles that I cut for Fonda, (Randy will deliver them to Iowa tomorrow), and mosquitos in my hair when I went out with the flashlight to take the flower pics.

A few plans for the rest of the week: Working on those photos, and watching the hangar roof being built at last, it's been 7 weeks since it blew off.
Here is picture thought I am sharing... Night Blooming Cereus, it will be wilted in the morning. Sure smells good, like an orchid.

21 June, 2009 -- Father's Day, longest day of the year

And one of the hottest, muggiest so far. And it will get hotter. Red hot.

That's it, red hot! With some styro block underneath and behind, ya think it would float in Grant's pool?



I tied up the pole beans and the tomato plants to the trumpet vine, to keep it all from leaning over the front, and found this little guy bouncing his web, warning me to GET BACK! So I got in closer, and the flash showed up the web that was invisible.

20 June, 2009 -- Military service for Lynn

Beautiful military services for Lynn Hurtt this afternoon, Jared plays taps.


Randy took off this morning, then turned around and came back. Two went left, two went right, and one went straight up, and ran into THIS. It was a hen with a craw full of our new grass seed. You don't want to see the rest of the photos.

19 June, 2009 -- Storms here and there

Fonda reported that major storm went through central Iowa this morning.
"We're in Story county, the 3rd picture is of a house in Slater but the tree was hollow and rotten, so it's not nearly so dramatic as it looks. However other trees in the area were totally uprooted by this storm. The video clip has the Slater house in it and interviews it's owner.
We didn't get much damage, we did have one 6 inch diameter limb break out of one of the walnut trees a day or two ago during a different storm, but other than that, mostly just sticks and leaves."

We watched the trailing end of the same storm go through central Missouri, tonight, and it was a nice lightning show. Looks like it was following I44 and I70, from Nevada through Jeff City & on to the east. I took some time exposures, but they aren't as good as the Iowa lightning bolts. However, watching it from a distance is better than having it right overhead!

I like these cloud formations.

Randy washed the bugs off of the Ag Truck. Do you suppose it will still fly?

Trusses and lumber arrived for the new roof! John helps unload. The work crew is putting up hay, while the sun shines... Perhaps Monday... We might get a roof???

Looks like my ship is coming in! Actually, it's an ambulance heading out on the four-lane.
